Death, Healing and Resurrection

NADoH has an unique death system that resembles the system described in D&D 3rd Edition rules. There are five different health states your character may be in:

  • Alive
  • Bleeding
  • Stabilized
  • Comatose
  • Dead

Health States

Alive

This is the state of a character that has more than zero hit points. Character may move and perform actions unless some other effect which prevents normal action is applied.

Bleeding

When character receives damage that drops hit points under zero he falls to the ground and starts bleeding, unless the damage received puts hit points directly to -10 or less, in which case character dies immediately. When character is bleeding he loses hit points in rapid pace and once hit points drop to -10 the character goes comatose. Character who is bleeding cannot perform any actions nor move. Companions of the bleeding character may use a healing potion or a cure spell to heal the character - if hit points after the healing are still under zero, bleeding character stabilizes, otherwise character is alive again and can perform actions and move.

Stabilized

Character who has been bleeding and is either healed by a potion or spell, or who succeeds in stabilization dice roll becomes stabilized. This state is similar to bleeding state, but now character loses hit points much more slowly. Companions of the bleeding character have now more time to provide healing to the wounded. It is also possible that a stabilized character recovers without any assistance. When character recovers, he is alive again and can perform actions and move.

Comatose

Character that is comatose cannot move, perform actions or see what is happening around him. He is unconscious and will perish very soon unless a skilled healer with a healing kit succeeds in healing skill check. If the attempt is successful, the comatose character recovers and is healed to 1 HP. Player will get option to die immediately, if it is unlikely that anyone can heal the character during two minutes of Real Time.

Dead

Dead character is transferred to Fugue Plane and all his equipped possessions are dropped. Corpse is created to the place of death. All the gold is dropped as well. Dropped items and gold may be picked up by anyone, so if you want to keep your old gear, it is recommended to either quickly reclaim it yourself or ask your companions to bring it to you. Looting corpses may be bad for your reputation - if you want to avoid possible reputation hit, be in the same party with the victim while picking his/her items up. This way your reputation is always unaffected.

Resurrection

Your character may be resurrected by several means. The corpse is needed for most of the resurrection methods - if the corpse is found, spells Raise Dead and Resurrection may be cast on it. It is also possible to pick up the dead body and carry it to a temple, where NPC cleric may cast the resurrection spell. The only difference between Raise Dead and Resurrection is the latter also heals the wounds and not only bring the dead back among the living. If there is no one to cast the spell nor carry the body to temple, it is also possible to us Tablet of Life located in Fugue Plane. However, be warned that using Tablet reduces your XP much more than other methods. No matter the resurrection method or number of times done, you won’t lose XP that comes from scripted quests.

XP Loss formulas

Method and conditionsBy Another PCBy NPCOther
Raise Dead/Resurrection for Level 1270 XP or 45% of total XP (smaller)300 XP or 50% of total XP-
Raise Dead/Resurrection for Level 230% of total XP33% of total XP-
Raise Dead/Resurrection for others45% of the Level Range50% of the Level Range-
Tablet of Life for Level 1--50% of XP
Tablet of Life for others--Lose one level per PnP rules

Definitions:

Level Range
XP amount needed from level N to level N+1. Eg. at level 1 your Level Range is 1000 XP, as you need 0→1000 XP from Level 1 to 2. At level 3 your level range is 3000 as you need 3000→6000 XP from level 3 to 4. You can simply calculate it as Current Level*1000.
One level per PnP rules
You lose your current level and go back half way between the last level. Eg. you are on level 3 and have 3897 XP. You die and use the tablet. Your XP drops to 2000, which is half way between levels 2 and 3. So, you lose 1897 XP in total. Special NADoH Rule: As you may find yourself in situation where you have enough XP to level but cannot afford the level trainer, this PnP rule has been customized a little bit. If you have enough XP for next level, but haven’t actually levelled yet, your level is considered to be one higher than it really is. This is to prevent people losing two levels in practice. Eg. You are on level 3 and have 6200 XP. So, you have enough XP for level 4 but haven’t levelled yet. You die and use the Tablet. Your XP drops back to 4500 and you stay on level 3. Without the custom rule, you would drop back to 2000 XP as per previous example.

Examples: Here are examples of XP formulas in practice. Consider example character on level 4 with 9000 XP. Remaining XP and lost XP after different methods of resurrection:

Raise Dead/Resurrection by NPC7000 XP2000 XP

Healing Items

Potions

Potions of curing come in different flavours - there are less and more powerful mixtures available. Potion of Cure Light Wounds is the most basic of healing potions and it is usually the most handy potion to carry with you. While it provides only very little healing especially for higher level characters with lots of hit points it has another important use: to revive bleeding or stabilized characters. Unlike cure potions on main servers, on NADoH you can use a potion on your companion taken that he or she is either bleeding or stabilized. All cure potions are craftable through Alchemy skill.

Healing Kit

Unlike in normal NWN campaigns and on main servers, Healing Kits are not used to heal immediately hit points, but they are used to save your fellow adventurer from death if they have gone comatose and will soon die without medical attention. Remember that if you go below zero hit points (but not to -10) you fall down bleeding and cannot move. Your companions may cast healing spells on you or make you drink healing potion in this state - thus saving your life. It is also possible that you are lucky and the bleeding slows and your state stabilizes - which means you still cannot move but will lose HPs at lower pace from now on. And if you are really lucky, after stabilization you may recover on your own, after which you can move again. However, if you don’t recover and your companions don’t heal you in time and you go to -10 HP, you go comatose and cannot be healed by cure spells or heal potions. Only healing kit and a skilled healer may save you if they act quite fast (2 minutes) and succeed in their attempt. This is the most common way how characters die - first they go to negatives and start bleeding and bleed to -10 HP after which they die because there is no healer to bring the character back.

Aloe Bandage

Aloe Bandage is a craftable healing item that acts in a bit different way than normal healing items. It won’t heal you immediately but makes you regenerate during some time. The amount and the period of regeneration depends on the healing skill of the character using the item. Also they are quite simple to craft (or purchase) and in skilled hands they are more effective method of healing than conventional healing potions. Please note that aloe bandage cannot be used to heal comatose players, only healing kit may do that. You do also need sufficient healing skill to know how to apply it.
