Friends, Countrymen, Nordockians, lend me your... uh.. eyes?

I'm pleased to announce that the Dev Team will soon be merging the Classic and Epic/Diff/Revenge modules.

I bet you have a lot of questions about what this entails, so I'll answer them one at a time. Hmm.. you, in the front, with the green-drippy Kamas.

Q: So you're removing some of the servers?
A: No. We'll still have Classic, Epic, Diff and Revenge (oh, and that NADoH beastie over there). "Merging" modules doesn't mean "merging" servers.

Q: Ok, smarty-pants, what exactly do you mean by "merging" the modules?
A: First, a little background on modules. Neverwinter Nights runs off of files called modules, which define the world of play. For quite some time we have been maintaining two different module files for the Land of Nordock: one for the Classic server, and another for the Epic, Diff, and Revenge servers. To "merge" them will mean that we take content from both and form a single module to be used for all of the servers.

Q: Won't this require having the NWN Expansion Packs (Shadows of Undrentide and Horde of the Underdark) installed in order to play on the Classic server?
A: Yes, nice observation. Let me repeat that: YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE BOTH EXPANSION PACKS INSTALLED TO PLAY ON ANY AND ALL NORDOCK SERVERS AFTER THIS CHANGE.

Q: You can't do this! I don't have the expansions, what am I supposed to do to get my fix?!
A: We have carefully weighed the pros and cons associated with this change, and agreed that this is the best course of action for Nordock. While it is unfortunate that some players will be shut out because of the requirement, the expansions are both readily available and inexpensive. At the time this posting, you can purchase Shadows of Undrentide for only $4.97 USD and Hordes of the Underdark for only $14.99 USD from Amazon.com. Purchasing through these links also helps ServerHost recoup (a small amount) of his operating costs.

Q: Alright, I'll pick them up, but this better all be for a good reason. What's so great about "merging" the modules?
A: I'm glad you asked. The biggest benefit is it will help unfreeze the module. Working with a module of Nordock's size in the Aurora toolset is unwieldy and time consuming. Even more so when the same changes have to be redone in another module, while avoiding breaks based on the differences between the modules (not the least being expansion packs). Once all the servers are running off of the same module, these extra issues will drop away and we can concentrate on making changes just once.

Q: W00t! (or, alternately, Crap!) Now Classic characters can obtain Epic levels!
A: Well, that's really more of a statement rather than a question. An incorrect one at that. All of the servers will still run different rulesets, which cater to the particular playstyle you've come to know and love on your particular server. That means that there will be no change in level cap, XP awards, trainer costs, loot drops, ILR, or death penalties.

Q: Fine, but at least I'll be able to use all of the super high level Epic items on Classic now, right?
A: No. Since Classic has been moved to the custom ILR configuration, any item beyond the level of ILR currently supported on Classic will not be useable. I suggest a trip to the nearest merchant to offload such items.

Q: So are you going to pull another vault wipe on us?
A: No.

Q: Really?
A: Really.

Q: Ok, I'm sold, so now I'm going to bug you until it is finished. Are you done yet? Are you done yet? Are you done yet?!
A: No. Soon. We've had a few catastrophic machine failures, but (thankfully) others have taken up the slack. The fine folks at the NPAC will be helping us test and we'll post again when we are getting ready to make the switch. Get copies of the expansion packs now if you don't have them already.

<insert bad pun or witty remark for closure>

In case anyone is concerned about this, I'm taking the liberty of reposting a response I made to the team some time ago when I was first asked about this:

I've had a few folk ask me to poke my head in.

I think we've been more then accomodating to folk. The long lifespan of Nordock is a testament to the quality of the people that have poured countless hours of their own uncompensated time into running the place.

The module has been running without expansions for 3+ years. I honestly never expected things to go this long. It sorta reminds me of some of the science fiction I've read, where some well-meaning advice from a long ago founder or the like becomes religious dogma and law of the land. Smile

I don't have a problem with Nordock moving forward...it's not like Hordes was released last month and we're chomping at the bit. With the limited resources and dev time, so much more could be done with a common code base. If there are still people who honestly haven't been able to afford the expansions...well, it's been long enough. Sometimes one must invest in one's hobby and this team's dev time has become more valuable. Man, I hope people take that in the spirit that it's intended: that is, stressing that Nordock is a labor of love and takes very real and hard effort. Don't ever think I forget that.

Move forward, with my blessing, down this new path of a common code base. People will adapt...and if they are desperate, there is the Public Release.

Thanks guys. For everything.

----------------------------------

So there ya go. The cranky old man who started it all says "Move forward!"

Ok, folks, here it comes!

We plan on updating the module in about 30 hours - thats tomorrow (Wednesday) evening (Pacific time).

This means after that time Classic will no longer be accessible by those remaining who do not have both expansion packs (SoU and HotU).

Great things are coming once we're over this hurdle, stay tuned for more updates!
